Golf Lessons for Women: What to Expect When You Start

More women are taking up golf every year, and a few lessons make the start much easier. Here is what to expect.

Your first lesson

A good instructor starts by asking about your goals and any experience. Expect to cover grip, stance and posture, then short swings with a mid iron. Many first lessons finish with putting and chipping.

What to wear and bring

  • Collared shirt or golf top and golf-appropriate pants, skirt or shorts
  • Golf shoes or clean athletic shoes
  • Water, sunscreen and a glove if you have one
  • Clubs are optional at first; ask the pro

Private, group or clinic?

Private lessons give the most attention. Group clinics are social and lower pressure. Many women mix both.

Practice short game, play nine holes with friends and join a women’s group.
