A golf league is a group of golfers who play on a set schedule, usually weekly, over a season, with scores tracked toward standings or prizes.
Common league formats
- Individual stroke play: each player counts every stroke.
- Match play: players or teams win holes against an opponent.
- Two-person teams (doubles): best ball or alternate shot.
- Scrambles: everyone hits, the team picks the best shot.
Handicaps
Most leagues use handicaps so golfers of different abilities can compete fairly. Your net score is your gross score minus strokes based on your handicap.
Nine or 18 holes
Many weeknight leagues play nine holes so players can finish after work.
League etiquette
- Show up on time and keep pace
- Post scores honestly
- Know the league’s local rules
- Let the organizer know early if you will miss a week
