Equity vs Non-Equity Golf Membership: What’s the Difference?

When you compare private clubs, you may see the terms equity and non-equity. The difference is about who owns the club and what you hold as a member.

Equity membership

In an equity club, members own a share of the club. Members often vote on major decisions and may be asked to cover capital improvements through assessments. Some equity clubs return part of the membership cost when you leave, depending on the bylaws.

Non-equity membership

In a non-equity club, an owner or company owns the club and members buy the right to use it. Members usually do not vote on club operations and are not responsible for capital assessments. Commitments are often simpler.

Questions to ask any club

  • Who owns the club?
  • Are there assessments?
  • What happens to the membership if you resign?
  • What is the minimum commitment?
