What Is a Links Course?

A links course is a golf course built on sandy coastal land, traditionally the strip between the sea and farmland in Scotland and Ireland. The word “links” comes from old Scots for rising ground near the shore.

Features of a links course

  • Few or no trees
  • Firm, fast turf with natural dunes and humps
  • Deep pot bunkers
  • Wind as a major factor
  • Ground game: bump-and-run shots are common

Links vs parkland

A parkland course is built inland, usually with trees, softer turf and more lush conditions. Shots tend to be played through the air. Most courses in the United States, including in New Jersey, are inland designs rather than true links.

Is every “links” course a true links?

No. Some courses use “links” in their name without coastal sandy ground. True links are rare outside the British Isles.

Tips for playing links-style golf

  • Keep the ball low in wind
  • Use the ground around the greens
  • Avoid pot bunkers at all costs
