What Is a Mulligan in Golf?

A mulligan is a do-over: replaying a bad shot without counting the first one. It is not allowed under the official Rules of Golf, but many casual groups use it.

When mulligans are used

  • Casual rounds: friends may allow one mulligan per nine, often off the first tee.
  • Charity outings and scrambles: organizers often sell mulligans to raise money.
  • Not in competition: mulligans are not allowed in tournaments, league play or handicap rounds.

Mulligan etiquette

  • Agree before the round
  • Do not slow down groups behind you
  • Do not post a score that used mulligans for handicap

Mulligan vs provisional ball

A provisional ball is an official rule when your ball may be lost or out of bounds. A mulligan is just a casual replay.
