A mulligan is a do-over: replaying a bad shot without counting the first one. It is not allowed under the official Rules of Golf, but many casual groups use it.
When mulligans are used
- Casual rounds: friends may allow one mulligan per nine, often off the first tee.
- Charity outings and scrambles: organizers often sell mulligans to raise money.
- Not in competition: mulligans are not allowed in tournaments, league play or handicap rounds.
Mulligan etiquette
- Agree before the round
- Do not slow down groups behind you
- Do not post a score that used mulligans for handicap
Mulligan vs provisional ball
A provisional ball is an official rule when your ball may be lost or out of bounds. A mulligan is just a casual replay.
