Golf has two main scoring formats. In stroke play you count every stroke over the round. In match play you win, lose or tie each hole against an opponent.
Stroke play
Every shot counts. The lowest total score wins. Most professional events and handicap rounds use stroke play. One bad hole can hurt your whole round.
Match play
Each hole is a mini contest. Win the hole and you go “1 up.” The match ends when one side is up by more holes than remain (for example, “3 and 2”). A blow-up hole only costs one hole.
Key differences
| Stroke play | Match play | |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring | Total strokes | Holes won |
| Concessions | Not allowed | Putts and holes can be conceded |
| Strategy | Steady, avoid big numbers | React to your opponent |
| Penalties | Usually strokes | Often loss of hole |
Which is better for you?
Stroke play tests consistency. Match play is more head-to-head and is common in club championships and leagues. Read how golf leagues work and see golf leagues at Bella Vista.
